Meet Educational Service Unit 7

Educational Service Unit 7 is a Nebraska-based educational support organization serving schools and districts across the region. IT Systems Engineer Travis Kassing manages a complex environment spanning network infrastructure, MDM devices, IP phones, security cameras, access controls, and more. After growing frustrated with IT Glue's API limitations and formatting constraints, Travis moved to self-hosted Hudu — and hasn't looked back.

  • Location: Nebraska, USA
  • Business type: Educational Service Unit
  • Customer since: 2023
  • Website: esu7.org

What challenges led you to switch to Hudu?

IT Glue's API and formatting limitations were holding the team back

Before Hudu, documentation was scattered across multiple platforms — none of which talked to each other the way they needed.

  • IT Glue's API was severely lacking, making it difficult to sync information from other platforms
  • KB article formatting was difficult and sharing articles externally was even more of a challenge
  • MDM device inventory lived across FileMaker Pro databases, spreadsheets, and Asset Panda
  • Knowledge base articles were managed separately in BookStack because IT Glue's formatting fell short
  • Neither IT Glue nor BookStack had an easy way to share articles with end users

How are you using Hudu today?

A lot of our documentation is generated via PowerShell scripts I have developed to automate our documentation. I am also syncing all UniFi network infrastructure to Hudu, which has really helped us in terms of the amount of time we spend documenting vs troubleshooting actual issues. All of this is now in a single platform, and easier to use than ever.

API & custom automation

Hudu's open API is the foundation of Travis's entire documentation workflow. With it, he's built PowerShell scripts that automatically pull data from platforms that don't have native Hudu integrations — including Mosyle MDM, IP phones, security cameras, and access control systems. If it's connected to the network, it can be documented automatically.

NinjaOne integration

Hudu's NinjaOne integration syncs RMM device data directly into Hudu, keeping asset records accurate without manual entry and freeing the team to focus on troubleshooting rather than documentation upkeep.

Knowledge base

Hudu's Knowledge Base replaced both IT Glue's limited article editor and a separate BookStack instance. With better formatting tools and the ability to share articles directly with end users, everything now lives in one place — and getting information to the right people is no longer a challenge.

Password management

Hudu makes it easy to share passwords and credentials with end users as needed, with the right controls in place — something that was cumbersome to manage across the team's previous toolset.

MapBox integration

Hudu's MapBox integration displays asset locations visually on a zoomable map within company overview pages — giving Travis's team a geographic view of devices and infrastructure across the sites they support.

Mobile app

Hudu's mobile app gives the team access to documentation on the go — useful for a team supporting physical infrastructure across multiple school locations.

Self-hosted deployment

Hudu's self-hosted option gives ESU 7 full control over their instance and data — an important consideration for an organization supporting schools and handling sensitive information.

What problems is Hudu solving for your business?

One platform for everything — automated, accurate, and shareable

  • Syncing platforms that don't have native integrations via the Hudu API
  • Replacing FileMaker Pro databases, spreadsheets, Asset Panda, and BookStack with a single platform
  • KB articles, passwords, and credentials that can be easily shared with end users as needed
  • No more documenting items by hand and then struggling to maintain accurate information

With that, ESU 7 has:

  • Improved ticket resolution speed by 1.25x
  • Cut end user onboarding time in half
  • Consolidated their tools
ESU 7 cut end user onboarding time in half and improved ticket resolution speed after switching from IT Glue to Hudu

What do you like most about Hudu?

If it's on the network, Hudu can document it

  • The ability to sync almost anything via the API — network switches, access points, MDM devices, RMM devices, IP phones, security cameras, access controls, and more
  • It's the most versatile documentation system I have ever used. The possibilities for automation are endless.
  • No more documenting items by hand and then struggling to maintain accurate information
"Hudu is a breath of fresh air compared to IT Glue." - ESU 7
